Rationale and Purpose of the Module:

The central objective of this module is to promote both the understanding and development of a range of applied skills appropriate to the roles that organisational and occupational psychologists and HR consultants perform in contemporary organisations. The module aims to inform and facilitate the development of specific skills, which will be utilised in the workplace, through the application of theory encountered throughout the programme. This module also aims to provide an opportunity for students to develop these key skills in an open and supportive learning environment.

Interpersonal Communication and Interaction Skills Development; Interview Skills, Coaching for Performance; Coaching for Development; Facilitation and Team Building; Resolving Conflict; Influence and Persuasion Skills, Providing Feedback

How the Module will be Taught and what will be the Learning Experiences of the Students:

As one of the key objectives of this course is the development of understanding the behavioural aspects of organisational life and the enhancement of students' skills, a combination of didactic and more innovative experiential learning techniques is adopted. Lectures take an integrated approach in an attempt to merge real life experiences with theoretical concepts and applications, involving role-plays, group dynamic exercises, and debriefing sessions. The module addresses the graduate attributes of knowledgeable (students will become competent in the various professional skills within their own areas of expertise), articulate (students will become competent in conveying ideas clearly, effectively and professional to different stakeholder at work) responsible (students will become personally and professionally responsible in their dealings with stakeholders in the organisation), and proactive (students will become confident in taking action and initiative at work, especially with regard to conflict resolution).
